Upon being awakened, Zen-Aku caused quite a bit of trouble for the current generation of rangers.  But there were subtle things he did that let them know he was not what he appeared.  At the same time, he slowly began to regain his memories, something Master Org did not want.  So he had Nayzor attempt to brainwash him; it did work, until the rangers managed to catch him during a lunar eclipse and learn from Merrick what had happened.  When they finally managed to defeat Zen-Aku in battle, the curse was lifted and Merrick was freed.
But Zen-Aku wasn't gone.  The mask had been broken during that fight, releasing his spirit.  He was no longer dependent on another to exist, free to do as he pleased.  And he was angry that the man he had spent so many years bonded to had discarded him.  When Master Org was defeated for good in the end, Merrick began travelling the world to continue to atone for the things he'd done.  Zen-Aku met up with him and decided to go with him since they both wanted the same thing.
